When selecting a handcrafted accessory, any jeweler will tell you that size and color are the most critical issues. Size refers to the scale of the piece and its overall length. Scale would be determined by the size of the beads, pendant or other assemblage. Large scale accessories would be composed of beads 10mm or more. The texture of the piece would be coarser as the bead size increases. Smaller beads create a more subtle textural composition that may compliment facial features, body elements, sleeve length or clothing necklines. Beyond a necklace being large enough to encircle a neck, length controls where the drape of the necklace hangs. An average woman would wear a 16" length necklace to have the drape hang approximately 1 ½" below her Adams apple. A petite woman would wear a 15" length for the same effect. A plus size woman may need 17" or more dependent on her body frame. Pendant necklaces are frequently of longer length to facilitate the pendant being framed by cleavage or the neckline of the clothes. A well fitting bead bracelet should circumscribe the wrist with just enough room to slide a finger between the bracelet and the wrist. Again, an average woman would wear a 7" bracelet and a plus size woman would wear 7 ½" to 9 ½" depending on bone structure.
The second critical factor to necklace and bracelet selection is color. Deciding upon a harmonious color composition for sterling silver beaded jewelry can depend upon skin complexion, eye, hair, and outfit color. Hues may be complimentary on the color wheel or opposites. While individual taste has a tremendous role in what is found to be attractive, we find frequently that a client will just feel compelled to purchase a particular gemstone.
